In his second decade of practice, Ryan is known for his thoughtful and creative approaches to addressing complex intellectual property issues – whether in litigation or procurement.

Ryan represents a wide array of clients ranging from Global Fortune 50 companies to startups, particularly in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. He offers honed skill in global patent portfolio creation and management, pharmaceutical patent life-cycle planning and IP due diligence. Ryan also conducts patentability and freedom-to-operate studies, due diligence reviews and infringement and validity studies, as well as litigates even the most challenging intellectual property cases.

Ryan’s passion for the law and science allow him to appreciate his clients’ ideas and develop comprehensive strategies that focus on safeguarding and rewarding their innovation. He offers individuals and businesses alike a comprehensive understanding of the entire life cycle of product development, and believes that safeguarding a company’s intangible assets is a requirement for realizing ROI and success in today’s domestic and international markets.

When a client is faced with litigation, Ryan is both effective and formidable. He has resolved serious, contentious litigation involving infringement, trade dress, trade secrets and false advertising, to name a few. An aggressive advocate, persuasive communicator and thoughtful negotiator, Ryan has resolved disputes both in and out of the courtroom for some of most innovative companies in the world on both the plaintiff and the defense sides.

Ryan is a frequent speaker on a broad array of intellectual property law topics. His charisma as an educator is also manifest in his ability to establish rapport and trust with those he counsels, as well as with their constituents, opposing counsel and the court.

  • Handi Quilter v. Gracewood Management, No. 2:16-cv-1101 (D. Utah 2016-2017): Represented Gracewood Management in patent case relating to automated quilting equipment that settled during the discovery stage
  • Ultradent Products, Inc. v. Inter-Med, No. 2:17-cv-953 (D. Utah 2017-2018): Represented Inter-Med in trademark case that settled during the pleadings stage
  • Seirus Innovative Accessories v. Do-Gree Fashions Ltd., No. 2:05-cv-355 (D. Utah 2007-2008): Represented Do-Gree in multiple-patent case and trade dress relating to skiwear, which settled shortly after the client received a favorable claim interpretation ruling, but before the pending motions for summary judgment of non-infringement were decided
  • Amway Corp. v. MonaVie, Inc., et al. (D. Utah 2008-2010): Represented the defendant/consolidated plaintiff in an action for claims involving a misappropriation of trade secret, a tortious interference with contract, false advertising and related class action for enforceability of contract (the parties settled during pretrial proceedings)
  • DCWV Acquisition Corp. v. Wallcandy, LLC (D. Utah 2011-2012): Successfully moved to dismiss the defendant from a lawsuit for lack of personal jurisdiction
