OVERVIEW

G. Peter Nichols is a partner in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg, where he is a member of the firm's Intellectual Property Department. Peter has more than 25 years of experience helping clients obtain U.S. and worldwide utility and design patents, navigate patent office contentious proceedings, develop and manage their portfolio, and provide freedom to use and other opinions.

Peter uses his deep understanding of clients' business operations to provide strategic counsel for their real-world business risks. He advises clients on how case law may affect their patent procurement strategies, their existing portfolios, and their product commercialization plans.

Peter has experience in a broad range of subject areas, including chemistry, polymers, chemical and mineral processing, food technology, nutraceuticals, electronics, and mechanical technologies. Peter's clients span several diverse industries, including consumer electronics, power tools, mining, household and consumer products, nutritional supplements, and cosmetics, among others.

Within his patent prosecution practice, Peter assists clients with preparation and prosecution of United States utility and design applications, and foreign and Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patent applications. He also represents clients in ex parte and inter partes re-examinations in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and in opposition proceedings before the patent offices outside of the United States. Peter provides strategic advice regarding the development, creation and management of clients' patent portfolios, and has patent litigation experience that adds to his current practice.

He earned his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law and a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota.

He is admitted to practice in the state of Illinois and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
