On Sept. 30, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) added furfuryl alcohol, CAS No. 90-00-0, to the Prop 65 list of chemicals known to cause cancer. OEHHA did not identify a safe harbor level for the chemical.
Per OEHHA’s announcement, furfuryl alcohol is an organic compound formed in foods (mostly waste vegetable materials) during thermal processing and as a result of the dehydration of sugars. It is commonly used as a solvent in textile printing and alkaline paint strippers, and as an ingredient in the manufacture of various chemical products such as foundry resins, adhesives, chemical intermediates, and wetting agents.
Prop 65 warnings for furfuryl alcohol will be required starting on Sept. 30, 2017.
