INDIANAPOLIS – They give back through pro bono work, mentoring, volunteering and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Barnes & Thornburg has recognized four individuals with annual service awards named for former or current firm attorneys, along with a commitment to community award. They are:
- The recipient of the Joseph A. Maley Pro Bono Award is Tom Mielenhausen, a partner in the Minneapolis office. Mielenhausen is active in the Children's Law Center of Minnesota and was instrumental in initiating training at the Minneapolis office for our lawyers interested in helping children in need. He was also recognized as a 2015 North Star Lawyer, an honor reserved for Minnesota State Bar Association members who provide 50 or more pro bono hours in a year. Mielenhausen focuses his practice on resolving insurance coverage disputes in favor of commercial policyholders throughout the U.S. The award was established in memory of firm partner John R. Maley’s oldest son, Joseph, who passed away in 2008; the first award was presented in 2009.
- This year’s Camille B. Conway Diversity Award was awarded to Karen McGee, managing partner of the Washington, D.C., office. Under her leadership, the number of women and minority lawyers in the Washington, D.C., office has grown, making that office one of the firm’s most diverse. As a member of the management committee, McGee "sets the tone at the top" that emphasizes the firm's commitment to diversity and inclusion. McGee concentrates her practice in the international trade area and also serves on the firm’s management committee. Camille Conway, a partner in the firm’s Chicago office, died suddenly in 2009 and the award was established in his name.
- Bruce White, a partner in the Chicago office, was the recipient of the Kenneth H. Inskeep Mentoring Award. White has mentored attorneys across practice groups, experience levels and offices, helping them define and refine their professional goals and substantive skill sets. White has more than 35 years of experience in litigation, arbitration and mediation of environmental disputes, and in administrative permitting and enforcement proceedings throughout the country.
- The recipient of the Commitment to Community Award is Jennifer Klinkhamer, the benefits and leave coordinator in Barnes & Thornburg’s Indianapolis office. She was selected for her willingness to go above and beyond on in planning successful internal and external community service projects. Klinkhamer is responsible for overseeing the programs and events for the United Way's annual campaign, Indy Do Day, numerous blood drives, the annual holiday giving program, the CPR/First Responder program and is a participant on the firm's Corporate Challenge team.
