Dennis Devine leverages his extensive knowledge of psychology and legal decision-making to conduct social science research that informs client decisions at each stage of the litigation process, particularly in preparation for jury trials.

His approach in his work with ThemeVision LLC, an affiliate of Barnes & Thornburg, involves applying psychological principles, theories and findings to assess and frame client needs; gathering and analyzing relevant data related to juror behavior using social science methods; and conveying key findings in a manner that clearly addresses focal questions.

Prior to joining ThemeVision and Barnes & Thornburg, Dr. Devine was a professor in the department of psychology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), where he conducted psycholegal research and taught courses in statistics, psychological measurement, and psychology and law. His research focused on jury decision-making, particularly determining when juries are influenced by extralegal factors and how the deliberation process affects verdicts and damage awards.

He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed social science journals and authored two book chapters that appeared in Advances in Psychology and Law: Volume 2 (2016) and in The Psychology of Juries (2017). Dr. Devine also wrote Jury Decision Making: The State of the Science (2012), a book that summarizes the scientific literature on juries and offers an integrative theory of how they reach decisions.

Dr. Devine previously served as a team development consultant for Roland Diamond Associates and Eli Lilly and Co., and also served on the editorial board for Law and Human Behavior for six years. He has given invited presentations at a conference on the “Future of Jury Research” sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Marion County Public Defender’s Office.
