Whether supporting the development of new engagements or serving as a strategic conduit between attorneys to find opportunities where the firm can actively engage in advancing the business goals of its clients, Matt Wells is committed to providing collaborative and thoughtful solutions to build deeper connections.
As the firm’s Director of Client Growth Strategy, Matt works with Client Growth and attorney leadership to develop objectives and key results for proactive client expansion activities across all departments, practice groups and industry teams. This includes the steadfast support of client and industry teams, international business development efforts, and operational services provided through the client experience life cycle, including direct interaction with in-house counsel and legal business professionals. He also works closely with multiple administrative units within the firm that are dedicated to supporting lateral attorneys, with a clear focus on helping them integrate their clients as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Further, Matt manages firmwide relationships with strategic partners, legal networks, and affiliations critical to the firm’s strategic goals. He leads programs that are focused on uplifting emerging diverse and young in career talent across the firm, while developing programming to deepen the relationships between established firm leaders and the next generation. This includes working with the Firm Diversity Partner on strategic business development initiatives that leverage the firm’s DEI advantage.
Prior to this role at the firm, Matt led the business development efforts for the firm’s Litigation Department, which consists of over 225 attorneys in over a dozen practice groups across the country. Before joining Barnes & Thornburg, Matt worked for a collegiate sports marketing partner of the University of Notre Dame and managed the institution’s relationships with athletics corporate sponsors that included some of the largest and most visible brands in the world.
