Barnes & Thornburg South Bend Names Alexander Gordon as Diversity Scholarship Recipient

SOUTH BEND – Barnes & Thornburg has named Alexander T. Gordon as the recipient of the 2021 South Bend Diversity Scholarship.

Gordon, a law student at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law, will work in the firm’s South Bend office during the summer of 2021. He entered law school after working as the director of sales and marketing for Granger-based Better Tools & Fasteners LLC for several years.

“It’s an incredible honor to receive the Barnes & Thornburg South Bend Diversity Scholarship,” said Gordon, who plans a transactional law practice. “I’m enormously grateful and proud to be given the opportunity to learn from one of the top law firms in the country.

“That Barnes & Thornburg actively seeks out students from diverse backgrounds and perspectives demonstrates its commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal community. The strong connections I’ve already made throughout the interview process and the warm welcomes I’ve received since accepting the offer have reinforced my desire to one day become a contributing member of this elite organization,” said Gordon.

The scholarship is open to first-year law students with a demonstrated commitment to positive change on the diversity, inclusion and equity front and to contributing meaningfully to the diversity, inclusion and equity goals of Barnes & Thornburg and the legal profession.

“We are excited for Alex to join us this summer,” said Timothy Emerick, South Bend’s law student hiring partner. “His prior business experience, coupled with impressive academic accomplishments, will make him a great addition to our team. His strong local connections to the South Bend area, his attention to detail, and his strong customer focus mindset are nice added bonuses.”

Gordon earned a bachelor’s degree in business economics from Grand Valley State University in 2009, where he was a member of the Economic Honor Society and the Economics Club. While in law school, Gordon received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award for legal writing.

With more than 700 attorneys and other legal professionals, Barnes & Thornburg is one of the largest law firms in the country. The firm serves clients worldwide from offices in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Delaware, Indiana, Michigan, Minneapolis, New York, Ohio, Raleigh, Salt Lake City, Texas and Washington, D.C.
