WASHINGTON D.C. – Barnes & Thornburg LLP has added William “Billy” Martin, a renowned civil and criminal trial lawyer who handles high-profile litigation and white collar investigations, as a partner in its Washington, D.C., office.
He is a member of the firm’s Litigation Department and the White Collar and Investigations Practice Group.
Over the course of Martin’s career, which includes over 150 jury trials, he has represented large corporations, political figures and high-profile sports and entertainment clients on a variety of complex civil and white collar crime matters before state and federal courts, in administrative hearings and in arbitrations. He has been involved in numerous internal investigations, and has served as outside counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ethics related to its investigation of a sitting member of Congress.
“I am pleased to be joining a firm with such talented white collar and investigations lawyers, including former U.S. Attorneys Roscoe Howard and Mike Battle in the Washington, D.C., office,” said Martin. “Teaming with them and other high-caliber attorneys here and in Los Angeles will allow me to offer corporate and entertainment industry clients sophisticated legal services for the complex matters they are facing.”
“Billy is a savvy strategist and tactician when it comes to complex civil and white collar litigation,” said William McErlean, chair of Barnes & Thornburg’s Litigation Department. “Whether he’s representing high-profile government officials or sports and entertainment luminaries, Billy’s exactly who you want representing and acting on your behalf.”
Earlier in his career, and prior to entering private practice, Martin worked as a prosecutor at both the state and federal levels in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also served as a Special Attorney in the U.S. Justice Department Organized Crime Strike Force and an Assistant U.S. Attorney before being elevated to Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
“The arrival of Billy not only complements the litigation bench and existing strengths of this growing office, but his reputation and notoriety will surely catch the attention of the government, business and legal communities in the Washington metropolitan area and beyond,” said Karen McGee, managing partner of the firm’s Washington, D.C., office.
In addition to consistently being recognized as one of the top trial lawyers in Washington, D.C., and across the country, Martin has been named one of the nation’s “50 Most Influential Minority Attorneys” by The National Law Journal. He earned his J.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Law and his B.A. from Howard University.
