With more than four decades of experience as a lawyer and working in a major corporation, Tom continues to serve clients and colleagues alike as a trusted adviser, veteran advocate, effective educator and esteemed mentor.
Prior to joining the firm, Tom served as vice president, deputy general counsel and assistant secretary of 3M Company. He led the 3M Office of General Counsel, overseeing approximately 170 lawyers and support staff worldwide with a budget in excess of $100 million. During his 36-year tenure with 3M, Tom worked with all sectors of the company to manage complex legal matters around the globe. He held a variety of positions including head of 3M’s legal function in Europe (based in Brussels) and management fellow in Washington, D.C. Tom’s unique in-house perspective has allowed him to develop not only substantial proficiencies, but also acute business acumen that he uses to compliment his legal counsel.
A seasoned lawyer with honed, hard-earned experience in commercial law and business application, Tom’s skill is broad, deep and far-reaching. He advises on general corporate compliance and governance, mass torts, class actions and product liability litigation, as well as international and insurance recovery matters. Tom’s clients have included Fortune 100 and Fortune 1000 companies, for which he has advised on issues ranging from individual matters to serving as national coordinating counsel for extensive litigation dockets.
Tom’s personal dedication to those he serves is manifest in his innate ability to identify individual strengths and workable solutions that achieve distinct goals. Tom knows what drives in-house lawyers, executives and business professionals at all levels when it comes to operational imperatives, budgetary requirements, financial drivers, and the productive use of outside legal services. Leveraging his decades of experience in-house, Tom works diligently with the firm’s lawyers to understand the often specific needs of in-house counsel in a more efficient manner.
