OVERVIEW

Monica J. Stover is a staff attorney in the Grand Rapids office of Barnes & Thornburg and is a member of the Intellectual Property Department and the Advertising & Marketing Law Practice Group. Monica focuses her practice on trademark, copyright, trade dress, advertising, trade secret, and unfair competition issues. In addition, she has experience assisting in litigation involving intellectual property issues.

Monica has experience providing intellectual property counseling to businesses of all sizes and across various industries. Monica works closely with clients to prosecute trademark applications, and enforce and defend their trademark rights in the U.S. and foreign jurisdictions. She helps clients understand the risks involved with adopting new trademarks, slogans, and business names, and advises on how to mitigate those risks. Monica also advises clients on advertising claim review and substantiation, helping clients ensure that their marketing, advertising, and promotions comply with federal and state laws and regulations.

In the area of IP litigation, Monica gained experience as part of a team who successfully defended a firm client against claims of patent infringement, misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of contract, and fraud, some of which were resolved in the client's favor on summary judgment and the rest successfully tried to a defense verdict after a six-day jury trial in federal court.

Before joining Barnes & Thornburg, Monica began as a law clerk for the firm. She also gained experience as a law clerk, working in-house for four years in the Legal Services Group at Bissell Homecare, Inc., where she assisted the general counsel on transactional, policy, and litigation matters and the Intellectual Property Group in the maintenance of the company's intellectual property portfolio and related patent, trademark, advertising, Internet and domain name matters.
