Barnes & Thornburg partners Michael Carrillo and Roscoe Howard have been named to the Lawyers of Color 2023 Power List, which recognizes “the most influential attorneys in the nation.” Honorees include general counsel, law firm managing partners, and executive committee members, as well as law school deans and justice organization leaders.
Carrillo is the managing partner of the firm’s Chicago office and a member of the management committee. As an intellectual property attorney, Carrillo focuses on patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret matters, as well as foreign and domestic patent and trademark protection. He helps clients develop and manage intellectual property portfolios of all sizes and also assists financial institutions in preparing and negotiating licenses for online banking software and technology.
Howard is the managing partner of the Washington, D.C., office and a member of the firm’s management committee. Howard’s practice focuses on white collar criminal defense matters, complex litigation, corporate compliance, and ethics issues. He advises corporate and individual clients throughout the criminal defense process including civil and administrative litigation, grand jury subpoenas, multijurisdictional matters and congressional inquiries.
Howard has dedicated his practice to creating leadership opportunities for women and lawyers of color. He currently leads at least two major global compliance engagement teams that are respectively 58 percent and 64 percent diverse. Leveraging those teams even further to invest in a class of diverse leaders demonstrates diversity is central to his business.
Carrillo and Howard have been intimately involved in the firm’s DEI efforts. They both previously served on firmwide DEI committees and currently serve on the board of the firm’s Racial and Social Justice Foundation. Carrillo and Howard were also previously named to the 2022 Lawyers of Color Law Firm Leaders Publication.
