Barnes & Thornburg Adds Intellectual Property Partner in Chicago

CHICAGO – Barnes & Thornburg has announced the addition of Adam Kaufmann as a partner in its Chicago office. Kaufmann joins the firm’s Intellectual Property Department with a focus on patent and trade secret litigation.

Kaufmann is an experienced patent litigator, representing clients in federal court, before the International Trade Commission, and in America Invents Act proceedings, among others.

“Adam knows his way around complex technologies and is skilled at presenting solid arguments when litigating patents and trade secret matters in the courts and before the International Trade Commission,” said Julia Gard, chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Department. “He’s a fantastic addition to our patent litigation team.”

Kaufmann counsels clients from a wide range of industries and products, including polymeric coatings, LED systems, ultraviolet light disinfection technology, oil-and-gas technology, GPS guidance and autosteering systems, motors, pharmaceuticals, RFID cards, flash memory devices, and biological extracts. Kaufmann’s practice centers on patent infringement matters and he has guided clients through inter partes review proceedings.

In addition, he has represented clients in trade secret, copyright, breach of contract, and unfair competition matters. Kaufmann also shares his industry knowledge and experience as a lecturer on patent related matters for industry groups, including the Japan Intellectual Property Association.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Adam, he’s a fantastic addition to our growing bench of impressive talent in Chicago,” said Michael Carrillo, Chicago office managing partner. “Adam brings a unique understanding of the intellectual property and patent disputes that clients are increasingly coming to us for, and he’s well-equipped to address those challenges.”

Kaufmann also has an active pro bono practice and recently led a precedent setting case around the Freedom of Information Act in Illinois. He earned his J.D. from the University of Chicago School of Law with honors and his B.S. in chemical engineering from Notre Dame, magna cum laude.
