Michiana SHRM February Monthly Luncheon - HR Unpacked Series

Leveraging his nearly 30 years of labor and employment law experience, Mike Palmer, Partner at Barnes & Thornburg and Michiana SHRM’s Legislative Director, is launching HR Unpacked, a workshop series for employers in Northern Indiana, Southwest Michigan, and Northeast Illinois. HR Unpacked will take a deep dive into the legal issues impacting each step of the employment relationship and provide specific steps and tools for managing compliance issues. 

Michiana SHRM is pleased to host the first HR Unpacked workshop, The Start of a Beautiful Relationship: Compliant Hiring and Onboarding. Poor hiring and onboarding compliance can lead to costly legal claims, high turnover and other exposure. During this workshop, participants will learn about the laws impacting the hiring and onboarding process, including anti-discrimination laws, salary history bans, pay transparency laws, criminal background search requirements, the I-9 process, and more. 

Participants will receive some template policies and other tools to manage these issues and learn how to:

• Spot and edit risky policies and practices to limit exposure to legal claims
• Ensure all necessary new hire paperwork, such as the I-9 forms, are completed correctly and on time
• Understand how to use applications, employee handbooks, and other legal compliance tools to manage risks associated with hiring and onboarding and to preserve an employer’s competitive advantages
