Los Angeles Mayor Issues Order Requiring Use of Nonmedical Grade Face Coverings

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has issued an emergency order requiring many nonmedical workers who provide essential services to wear nonmedical-grade face coverings while performing their work. The order, which becomes effective on April 10, 2020, mandates that the employers provide these essential workers with cloth face coverings that shield their noses and mouths or reimburse them for the cost of face coverings.

Employers of essential services workers also must: implement physical distancing measures for employees, customers, and visitors; ensure employees have access to a clean restroom stocked with appropriate cleansing products; and, allow employees to wash their hands at least every 30 minutes. Workers must wash face coverings at least once a day.

The order also requires customers of essential businesses to wear face coverings and gives businesses the right to refuse customers admission or service if they do not wear them.
