Indiana University Maurer School of Law Student Blake Welter Receives Barnes & Thornburg 1L Diversity Scholarship

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana University Maurer School of Law student Blake T. Welter is the 2022 recipient of Barnes & Thornburg’s annual 1L Diversity Scholarship. Welter will be a 2022 summer associate in the firm’s Indianapolis office.

“From the start, Barnes & Thornburg felt like a natural fit for me. The attorneys I had the pleasure to speak with were charismatic and warm, and the team had a genuine interest to learn more about my personal story,” Welter said. “Barnes & Thornburg stood out to me with its pioneering vision and culture. This firm has a strong understanding of the strength diversity brings, and its commitment to inclusion is reflected by both its personnel and its meaningful initiatives. This is a group of special individuals who I am honored to start my legal career with. I am thrilled for what the program will bring this summer.”

Welter, who received an undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona, is deeply involved in several law school organizations, including Outreach for Legal Literacy, Latinx Law Student Association, National Lawyers Guild, Intellectual Property Association, and Life Experience, Then School (LETS).

“We are pleased and honored to award our 1L Diversity Scholarship to Blake and to welcome him into the Barnes & Thornburg family. Blake stood out immediately due to his strong resume, impressive background, and thoughtful observations about diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal environment. I know he has a bright future ahead, and I am excited to be a part of that journey,” said Indianapolis hiring partner Kathleen L. Matsoukas.

The 1L Diversity Scholarship is open to first-year law students with a demonstrated commitment to positive change on the diversity, inclusion and equity (DEI) front and to contributing meaningfully to the DEI goals of Barnes & Thornburg and the legal profession.

“Our Diversity Scholarship program has a history of attracting people from different backgrounds and experiences to support our wide array of clients. We are delighted that Blake has accepted our scholarship offer and look forward to working alongside him and the other scholarship recipients,” said Dawn R. Rosemond, the firm’s diversity partner.
