Thomas Payne is an associate in the Indianapolis office of Barnes & Thornburg, where he is a member of the firm’s Labor and Employment Department.
Thomas counsels clients in navigating virtually all areas of the employment relationship, with a primary focus on traditional labor relations issues, including assisting in the defense of unfair labor practices before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), union representation elections, collective bargaining, and contract enforcement.
Thomas also has experience assisting in labor arbitration proceedings where he helped clients achieve positive outcomes in both employee discipline and contract interpretation cases.
The rest of Thomas’ practice is devoted to employment counseling and litigation. He has defended clients in discrimination, harassment, retaliation and wrongful discharge claims in both state and federal courts. Thomas also has helped secure preferred settlement results for clients in both employment and general litigation disputes.
Thomas’ counseling experience includes helping clients stay up to date on the ever-changing area of labor and employment law, such as independent contractor classification issues, state and federal wage laws, union avoidance strategies, and employee handbook drafting and review, to name a few.
Prior to joining the firm full-time, Thomas served as a summer associate in the firm’s Indianapolis office. While earning his undergraduate degree, he interned for U.S. Sen. Richard G. Lugar of Indiana.
