Having served as general counsel to municipal clients his entire career, Scott Dienes focuses his practice on local government, finance and land use matters. An analytical and strategic thinker, Scott frequently serves as lead counsel and outside general counsel to his clients.
Scott acts as counsel to municipalities, downtown development authorities, school districts, water and sewer authorities, district libraries, mental health authorities, police and fire departments and boards, and brownfield redevelopment authorities. He serves as special counsel to governmental units and private developers on complex development and litigation matters throughout western Michigan, as well as advises on a wide variety of financing matters, a discipline that has grown out of his experience in working with local governments.
In tandem to his municipal financing practice, Scott is also retained by doctors and lawyers as their general counsel on both personal and commercial law matters. Notably, he serves as lead counsel for doctors, solving an array of the complex problems they face in managing their physician practices today. In addition, Scott has cultivated honed skill advising on the land use issues and neighbor disputes that arise in the course of owning and developing second lakeshore homes.
Moreover, Scott has worked with public and private higher education institutions on issues such as complex financial restructurings, reductions in force, internal investigations, strategic planning, significant real estate transactions, the establishment and closure of satellite campuses, and searches for key leadership.
A direct communicator who is both sincere and true to his word, Scott’s affable style has served him particularly well with his clients and colleagues alike, as well as with opposing counsel and elected and appointed officials. A former assistant prosecuting attorney, Scott is valued for his measured judgement and frank approach when it comes to navigating through even the most challenging circumstances.
