OVERVIEW

A former trademark examining attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Nathan Ranns has a unique ability to demystify the trademark prosecution process. He uses that familiarity and understanding to translate complex intellectual property issues into straightforward solutions, crafting practical and tailored strategies for his clients.

Nathan assists clients with their trademark transactions because he knows what they may encounter in that process. Namely, he advises on matters concerning likelihood of confusion, ownership, use in commerce, acquired distinctiveness, descriptive or generic use, and functionality, as well as how to guide clients through trademark prosecution.

While with the USPTO, Nathan examined over 2,000 applications for trademark registration – exposing him to nearly every legal issue that arises in the prosecution process – under the Trademark Act, including searching for conflicting registrations and drafting opinions; reviewing international applications filed under the act; and representing the office in ex parte appeals before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB).

Beyond trademarks, Nathan has a knack for analyzing complex legal and factual questions that arise for his clients regarding a range of other IP issues. He also has experience drafting cease and desist letters, as well as licensing agreements.

During law school, he gained experience as a law clerk with the U.S. International Trade Commission’s Office of Unfair Import Investigations and as a legal intern with the Public Broadcasting Service’s Office of the General Counsel and the Recording Industry Association of America.

Nathan is not regularly admitted to practice in the local courts of Indiana.
