Kelsey J. Schmidt is an associate in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg, where she is a member of the firm's Labor and Employment Department. She defends employers against claims of discrimination, retaliation, harassment, and wage and hour violations in federal and state court and before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Illinois Department of Human Rights and the Illinois Department of Labor.
Kelsey has experience drafting and negotiating agreements involving personnel policies and handbooks, restrictive covenants, bonus and executive compensation, termination and discipline, and settlement terms and conditions. She has counseled employers on decisions pertaining to hiring, discipline, termination, layoffs, leaves of absence, and trade secret and non-compete disputes. She has also partnered with executives and directors to develop and communicate effective compliance programs, policies and procedures consistent with federal and state laws.
In addition, Kelsey has experience representing employers against union grievances and unfair labor practice charges by conducting investigative employee and witness interviews and preparing for and participating in arbitrations. Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, she was with a Chicago labor and employment law firm.
