In his second decade of practice, Joel has resolved complex disputes for clients that include entrepreneurs, fast-growth and middle market companies, multinational and international companies, and mature corporations. He helps clients bring and defend disputes before state and federal courts and administrative agencies across the country.
A skilled trial attorney, Joel has taken on difficult disputes and prevailed before judges, juries and arbitrators alike. His experience includes litigating and trying complex civil disputes involving breach of contract, business torts, trade secrets, product liability, toxic torts, consumer class actions, construction and healthcare law.
Notably, Joel is committed to resolving litigation in the context of each client’s specific financial goals and operational concerns. Valued for his good judgement, Joel knows, from practical experience, that protracted litigation, trial and appeals are not always the optimal route to conserving his clients’ resources and reputation. As a result, when it is in his clients’ interest to settle, Joel is dedicated to realizing the result as quickly as possible.

- Served as first chair trial counsel in a JAMS Arbitration on behalf of a corporate defendant in a complex commercial dispute
- Obtained the California Court of Appeal’s reversal of a judgment entered against a client in a bench trial on the grounds that the plaintiff’s claim was barred by the statute of limitations
- Obtained numerous seven-figure settlements on behalf of plaintiffs in commercial disputes
- Obtained summary judgment on behalf of the defendant in a putative class action in which the plaintiff alleged multiple violations of the Telephone Consumer Protections Act
- Obtained summary judgment on behalf of a chemical supplier in a multi-million dollar CERCLA cost recovery action
- Served as a trial counsel and obtained a complete defense verdict for an international asset management business after a four-week trial in which the plaintiff, a former hedge fund manager, sought more than $500 million in damages based on contract, fraud and defamation claims
- Served as trial counsel and obtained a complete defense verdict on behalf of a commercial tenant on claims it breached a commercial lease
- Obtained summary judgment on behalf of an international clothing retailer in an Americans with Disabilities Act compliance dispute
- Represented medical groups, a healthcare management company and their owners in multiple lawsuits, including defending against claims for breach of contract, fraud, defamation, tortious interference, breach of fiduciary duty and unfair competition
- Defended a litigation services company against claims that it conspired to misappropriate a competitor’s trade secrets when it recruited and hired a competitor’s salesperson
- Defended a dietary supplement manufacturer in an alleged national consumer class action for claims of false and misleading advertising
- Representing an independent film production company in various contract disputes
- Representing a hotel owner in an action against contractors and product suppliers relating to the renovation of hotel showers
- Defending a global ink manufacturer in toxic tort/product liability actions located in jurisdictions throughout the United States
