Joe Matteo is a trial lawyer whose practice focuses on complex commercial litigation and bankruptcy disputes. He regularly appears in federal and state trial and appellate courts throughout the country. He also has handled arbitration proceedings under the rules of almost every major arbitral institution.

Joe represents both plaintiffs and defendants in a broad range of matters, including cases involving allegations of breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, defamation, fraud, fraudulent transfer, negligence, negligent misrepresentation, civil RICO violations, misappropriation of trade secrets, tortious interference, and unjust enrichment. His clients include financial institutions, investment managers, manufacturing companies, and corporate officers and directors.

Joe’s representative commercial litigation experience includes the following:

  • Obtained a complete defense award as lead trial counsel to an international manufacturer of home appliances in an arbitration concerning an alleged breach of a trademark licensing agreement
  • Defended a beverage producer against breach of contract claims asserted by a former distributor, resulting in a favorable result after an eight-day arbitration under the rules of the American Arbitration Association
  • Secured multiple judgments on behalf of the court-appointed liquidators of a hedge fund in litigation arising from the fraudulent transfer of the fund’s assets
  • Obtained complete dismissal of breach of contract and tort claims asserted against a boutique investment bank arising out of a bond refinancing and interest-rate swap contract
  • Served as trial counsel to a broker-dealer in two arbitration proceedings, both resulting in judgments in favor of the broker-dealer on all claims

Joe’s representative bankruptcy litigation experience includes the following:

  • Defended an international oil and gas company against actual and constructive fraudulent conveyance claims
  • Represented the founder and former chief executive officer of a solar energy company in connection with a Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York
  • Defended a manufacturing company against preference claims asserted by a liquidating trustee
  • Represented an ad hoc consortium of Trust Preferred Security holders in the Chapter 11 proceedings of Washington Mutual, Inc.
