Brent has experience in structuring and negotiating complex stock and asset purchases, mergers, conversions, reorganizations and joint venture arrangements on behalf of both public and private company clients. He also has experience advising insurance and financial service companies and banks in connection with various transactional matters, including domestic and cross-border alternative financing and derivative transactions (including regulatory reserve financings) and complex reinsurance arrangements. Brent has been involved in a number of innovative transactions for the transfer of insurance-related risks to the capital markets, including embedded value and closed block securitizations.
Before joining Barnes & Thornburg, Brent was an associate at a large firm in Chicago. Prior to his legal work, he served stints in the summer as a law clerk in the Felony Trial Division of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and as a financial analyst in the private equity group of Credit Suisse.
Brent received his J.D. magna cum laude in May 2009 from the University of Notre Dame Law School. He earned a B.A. degree in management at Purdue University's Krannert School of Management in 2005. While at Purdue, Brent was a four-year letter winner and team captain of the varsity baseball team, earning All-American, All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten honors.
Brent is admitted to practice in the state of Illinois. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association. Active in the community, Brent served as a fellow in the public interest law initiative fellowship program representing victims of housing discrimination, and also volunteers as a lawyer coach in the mock trial competition hosted by the Chicago Coalition for Law-related Education.
