OVERVIEW

Nicholas Rivera utilizes a keen understanding of the music industry, intellectual property, and business to tailor individualized legal approaches for each client. Nick’s practice is focused in music, social media and licensing.

Born in Los Angeles and raised in the music industry, Nick helps clients utilize their intellectual property assets financially and artistically. Nick’s practice includes a wide range of corporate transactions and contracts in the entertainment and music industry, such as copyright licensing, sales, acquisitions, and due diligence; trademark licensing; joint ventures; management agreements; publishing agreements; co-publishing agreements; record deals; and songwriter and producer agreements. Nick also advises clients on fair use and potential infringement.

Nick’s practice involves responding to clients’ immediate needs while maintaining and executing clients’ long-term legal strategies. He evaluates clients’ legal exposure in various transactions, develops internal systems for clients to ensure proper use of licensed property, and assists clients in maintaining their IP rights.

While in law school, Nick was a law clerk for the general counsel of 3M, where he consulted global directors on the current law affecting fiduciary duty of architects and contractors. He also spent two years in the firm’s Minneapolis office as a law clerk and summer associate working in a variety of practice areas.

As a lifelong DJ, Nick’s work caught the attention of record labels and publishing companies. While at Indiana University, he worked as a label promotions assistant at Secretly Group, where he prepared promotional packages to raise artist awareness and enhanced the social media presence for touring artists and record labels. He subsequently spent two years interning at Artist Publishing Group, researching, analyzing and pitching new songwriters and producers to A&R (artists and repertoire) professionals and recommending innovative directions for pop music.

Beyond his practice, Nick enjoys DJing, hiking, political and pop-culture podcasts, cooking and time with family.

Nick is not regularly admitted to practice in the local courts of Minnesota.
