Matthew represents defendants in all phases of product liability and mass tort litigation across the country. He has defended companies in cases involving adult and childhood vaccines; asthma, allergy, heartburn, seizure, and antipsychotic prescription medications; and orthopedic and cardiac medical devices. Matthew has taken and defended numerous fact and expert depositions, drafted and argued dispositive pretrial motions, managed large-scale document reviews and productions, and prepared key expert and fact witnesses for depositions and trials.
Matthew also serves in a variety of roles on expert teams, including retaining and developing defense experts focused on causation, design, and warning adequacy, as well as deposing key plaintiff-side experts.
Outside of the pharmaceutical and vaccine space, Matthew served as national counsel to a kratom manufacturer defending wrongful death suits across multiple state courts and represented a credit reporting agency in Fair Credit Reporting Act litigation, managing a large docket of individual cases in federal court. He also represented monoline insurers in litigation arising from mortgage-backed securities transactions and defended a corporate board in shareholder derivative actions. Matthew also maintains a pro bono practice focused on criminal defense appeals and other post-trial issues.
Before law school, Matthew spent seven years as a science editor, including editing a National Institutes of Health magazine on drug abuse research and treatment and producing peer-reviewed journals for a university press—a background that serves him well in litigation turning on scientific and medical evidence.
