John Vastag is an associate in Barnes & Thornburg’s Fort Wayne office, where he is a member of the Litigation Department. Joining the firm from a clerkship on the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, he previously served as a deputy attorney general in the Solicitor General Division of the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, where he represented Indiana in major cases at every level of state and federal court as well as assisted in Indiana’s amicus curiae practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

John spent a year clerking for the Hon. Ryan T. Holte on the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, assisting in the adjudication of the court’s docket of high-dollar civil monetary claims made against the federal government. John’s clerkship provided him with deep experience in government contracting disputes, bid protests, Fifth Amendment taking claims, and military pay cases. Adding to his in-chambers experience, John also interned during law school for Judge Silvia Carreño-Coll of the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico.

As a deputy attorney general in Indiana’s Solicitor General Division, John handled merits briefing before the Seventh, Eighth, and D.C. Circuits in major cases on the cutting edge of federal constitutional law. He led the drafting of Indiana’s section of a U.S. Supreme Court amicus brief for a 23-state coalition — co-led by Indiana — in a significant equal protection case, and he secured a stay and prevailed in the expedited appeal of a multimillion-dollar preliminary injunction entered against the state. His time as a deputy attorney general afforded him broad experience in civil litigation at all stages, in and out of the courtroom.

John earned his J.D. with honors from Indiana University Maurer School of Law. While at Maurer, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Indiana Law Journal and was a finalist with oral advocacy honors in the Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition as well as a regional semifinalist in the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition.
