David Gotlieb is chair of the firm’s Corporate Department. For more than three decades, David has been a trusted business adviser and lawyer to some of the largest closely held businesses in the Upper Midwest. As a result, he has been involved in hundreds of business transactions, ranging from under $50 million to over $1 billion in enterprise value.
David is particularly appreciated by his clients for his entrepreneurial approach, which is to understand first and foremost the goals of the engagement, both legal and business, and to work diligently to help clients achieve the desired outcome. Throughout the process, David treats his client's business and affairs as if they were his own. He is valued for designing actionable plans that accomplish client goals that are also cost-effective and positive for the client’s reputation and brand across market segments.
David’s client engagements span a broad range of industries, including hedge funds, banks, manufacturers, recycling companies, insurance companies, retail chains and consumer goods companies. David’s diverse experience allows him to more effectively help clients make the right decisions. Notably, he is frequently asked to serve on clients’ boards of directors, a testament to his personal commitment to those he serves.

David is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who began his career as a tax specialist. This experience helps David to understand financial data and decision-making, profitability, risk, reward and return on investment. When serving as a trusted adviser, David is a professional who not only understands the law, but also knows, from extensive first-hand financial analysis and experience, the basis on which business decisions are made.
Prior to private practice, David worked for two years in the U.S. Senate as a principal aide on tax and business matters. In addition, he also served as legal counsel to former U.S. Sen. Rudy Boschwitz (R-Minn.).
