Barnes & Thornburg Continues Growth of Healthcare Department With Prominent Trio

Dwayne Piñon, Emily Tremmel and Meredith Williams expand firm’s capabilities across regulatory, transactional and enforcement areas

Dwayne Pinon, Emily Tremmel, and Meredith Williams Join Barnes & Thornburg
Barnes & Thornburg welcomes Dwayne Piñon, Emily Tremmel and Meredith Williams as counsel in the firm’s Healthcare Department. The additions bring exceptional depth across pharmacy law, healthcare transactions, federal fraud and abuse compliance, and government enforcement — reinforcing Barnes & Thornburg's position as a leading national healthcare law firm.

"These three additions are a remarkable reflection of the depth and caliber of talent that Barnes & Thornburg's Healthcare practice is attracting," said John E. Kelly, chair of Barnes & Thornburg's Healthcare Department. "Dwayne's pharmacy experience and regulatory track record, Emily's transactional versatility and in-house perspective, and Meredith's unparalleled government enforcement experience together strengthen our ability to meet all the legal needs of our clients across a broad spectrum of practices — from day-to-day compliance, evolving regulatory and operational issues, and high-stakes government investigations."

Piñon, who joins the Chicago office, brings nearly 30 years of in-house legal experience at Walgreens and a background as a licensed pharmacist to his healthcare regulatory practice. Tremmel, who is located in Chicago, has spent the past three decades advising physicians and healthcare entities on corporate and regulatory matters, both in private practice and as in-house counsel. Williams, who joins the D.C. office, advises healthcare clients on federal fraud and abuse compliance, regulatory strategy, and government investigations, drawing on more than 20 years as a senior attorney at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General.

"Adding Dwayne, Emily, and Meredith to our Chicago and D.C. offices in the same announcement speaks to the momentum we have built in healthcare," said Michael A. Carrillo, managing partner of Barnes & Thornburg's Chicago office. “We are thrilled to have Dwayne and Emily join our Chicago community, where they will be tremendous assets to our clients and our teams.”

"Our clients operate in one of the most complex regulatory environments in the country, and having lawyers of this caliber — who have lived inside the institutions that write and enforce the rules — is an extraordinary advantage," said Roscoe C. Howard, Jr., managing partner of Barnes & Thornburg's Washington, D.C., office.

With more than 100 lawyers, BT's Healthcare practice represents clients across the full spectrum of the industry, including health systems, hospitals, physicians, managed care organizations, pharmaceutical companies, medical device manufacturers, and life sciences organizations.
