Barnes & Thornburg Will Relocate Washington, D.C., Office to District Center to Accommodate Continued Growth

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Barnes & Thornburg announced today it has signed a 13-year lease to relocate its Washington, D.C., office to the top floor of District Center at 555 12th Street NW. The office expects to move in January 2023 to the new location in the central business district, which adds more than 6,000 square feet of space to accommodate additional growth as the firm continues to expand its presence in the D.C. area.

As a result of significant growth over the past several years, Barnes & Thornburg’s New York, Delaware, and Atlanta offices are all relocating to larger offices this year. Over the last four years, the firm’s active attorney headcount grew approximately 22 percent. The firm’s Washington, D.C., office has increased its total headcount by 50 percent over the past five years.

District Center, a joint venture between MetLife Investment Management and Norges Bank Investment Management, is a mixed-use smart building that encompasses an entire city block and is adjacent to the Metro Center station. The LEED Gold building has almost 800,000 square feet of premier office space, restaurants and retail. Barnes & Thornburg’s new lease of over 35,000 square feet represents nearly 25 percent more space than the firm’s previous office in the city.

“As our roster of talented attorneys in D.C. continues to expand, we’re excited to be able to offer them a spacious high-tech workplace at District Center,” said Roscoe C. Howard Jr., Washington, D.C. office managing partner. “This new and improved space will allow us to further develop a collaborative work environment favorable to the success and well-being of our lawyers, team and clients.”

Jon Glass and Gary Stein of Savills represented the firm in lease negotiations. The landlord was represented in lease negotiations by Matt Pacinelli, Andy Eichberg, John Klinke and Josh Kreider of Stream Realty Partners.

The firm will remain in its current location at 1717 Pennsylvania Avenue NW until the end of this year.

With more than 700 attorneys and other legal professionals, Barnes & Thornburg is one of the largest law firms in the country. The firm serves clients worldwide from offices in Atlanta, Boston, California, Chicago, Delaware, Indiana, Michigan, Minneapolis, New York, Ohio, Raleigh, Salt Lake City, Texas and Washington, D.C.
