INDIANAPOLIS – The American Lawyer has named Barnes & Thornburg partner John Maley to its inaugural list of Midwest Trailblazers for his leadership and coordination of the firm’s pro bono program and his dedication to the community.
Practicing in the firm’s Indianapolis office, Maley has served as pro bono chair for 20 years for the firm of more than 700 attorneys and legal professionals. He and Barnes & Thornburg have committed thousands of hours to pro bono service, and recently pledged to devote 10,000 hours of pro bono service over the next three years with Koch Industries’ in-house legal team.
He was also recognized for the innovative pro bono partnerships he and others have spearheaded at Barnes & Thornburg.
A litigator and trial attorney, Maley represents publicly traded and private companies in regional and national litigation, and advises and represents leading universities in higher education issues. He frequently serves as special litigation counsel to the State of Indiana.
Maley is past-president of the Indianapolis Bar Association and the Indianapolis Bar Foundation and he created and chairs the Whitewater Valley Pro Bono Commission, which serves pro bono needs in east Central Indiana, where he was born and raised.
He also co-chairs and lectures for the Indianapolis Bar Association’s IndyBar Review course. For 28 years, he has chaired the Local Rules Committee of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Southern District of Indiana. Maley is also a longstanding member of the Local Rules Committee of the court’s Northern District of Indiana.
