Barnes & Thornburg Adds Distinguished Legal Scholar in Chicago

CHICAGO – Barnes & Thornburg is pleased to announce that one of the nation’s foremost legal scholars, Martin H. Redish, has joined the firm’s Litigation Department as of counsel. Consistently ranked among the 20 most cited legal scholars of all time, Redish joins in Chicago, where he is also the Louis and Harriet Ancel Professor of Law and Public Policy at Northwestern University School of Law.

“Marty is widely recognized as the original source of First Amendment protection of commercial speech, and his knowledge of federal jurisdiction, civil procedure, freedom of expression and constitutional law is unparalleled,” said Randy Brown, chair of the firm’s Litigation Department. “He will be an invaluable resource for our clients seeking counsel in these and other areas at the trial and appellate court levels.”

In his practice, Redish will focus on matters of procedure, constitutional law and jurisdiction, as well as freedom of expression and the First Amendment.

In addition to his prolific career as a professor and writer, Redish has served as an expert witness before numerous congressional committees, on matters including congressional power to control federal jurisdiction, class actions and First Amendment protection of free expression.

His scholarship has been quoted or cited in 22 U.S. Supreme Court opinions, and he is the author of 17 books, including Judicial Independence and the American Constitution: A Democratic Paradox and The Adversary First Amendment: Free Expression and the Foundations of American Democracy.

Redish earned his A.B., with highest honors, in political science from the University of Pennsylvania and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School.
