Program Overview

Part I: The Myriad of Issues Facing Managers on Which They Must Have Familiarity

Barnes & Thornburg LLP presenters Kathleen Anderson, Mark Kittaka, Jason Clagg, Mark Scudder and Adam Bartrom will address the framework of the various issues that managers face when interacting with employees. This framework includes not only the Family & Medical Leave Act (the “FMLA”), the Americans with Disabilities Act, and other laws, but also critical concerns such as employee safety. The overviews presented by the Barnes & Thornburg team will lead into an engaging panel discussion (we promise).

Part II: From the Trenches: How are Current Demands and Challenges Being Met in Today’s Workplace

With the benefit of the background presented by the Barnes & Thornburg team, a panel of human resources professionals will help address practical solutions and concerns faced in the today’s workplace. With the attorney presenters, the panel will consider questions such as: What happens when the requirements of laws seem to conflict with the desire to have a safe and productive workplace? What are the biggest manager training challenges facing companies? What roles do Employee Assistance Plans and health care providers have in providing answers or resources? What happens when you know too much about an employee’s personal life? What are companies seeing with respect to employee stress and how are they dealing with it? How do employers balance the desire to be understanding and accommodating with the need for consistency? What are the most challenging aspects of managing today’s workplace and its human resources function?
