In the face of a strong Republican majority in the Legislature and Gov. Daniels' support in the Statehouse, the Indiana AFL-CIO is now trying to take its message to the masses. The AFL-CIO, along with Indiana Democrats, is relying upon a recent poll to support its contention that a majority of Hoosiers support a referendum on the issue as opposed to a legislative vote. The Union also relies upon the poll to argue that more debate needs to occur on the controversial topic before a vote takes place. The full results of the poll can be found here.
In fact, the Indiana Democrats appeared willing to come to the General Assembly today to push an amendment to seek a referendum, but according to the Indianapolis Star, someone -- no one knows who -- had already secured an opinion from the Legislative Services Agency, that an amendment seeking a referendum was likely unconstitutional. Cut off at the pass, the Democrats stayed off the floor, the Republican majority was denied a quorum in the Indiana House and another day passed without the House being called into session. House Speaker Brian Bosma, according to The Star , has now directed that the Democrats be subject to a $1,000 a day fine for not being present in chamber.Subscribe
