Companies increasingly are relying on outside contractors to supplement their business needs and cut operating costs. Indeed, the number of independent contractors hired by small businesses now far outpaces the number of regular employees hired over the same period. This presentation will examine these developments, along with the state of the law on contractor classification, and the common pitfalls that companies make in designating and working with contractors.

Using contractors undeniably is attractive to business: contractors offer the promise of instant expertise, flexibility in scheduling and commitment, and less of a hassle than dealing with the red tape that comes with the traditional employment relationship. Those benefits can come with a price tag – namely the significant risk of legal exposure for companies that get it wrong. Unfortunately, many businesses (either inadvertently or deliberately) still go overboard in classifying workers as contractors. Learn how to avoid these costly mistakes and how to get it right.
